The Ultimate Vertical Blinds Buying Guide

6 minute read

Vertical blinds stand as an enduring symbol of both functionality and aesthetic appeal. These versatile window coverings have been a staple in homes and offices for decades, thanks to their ability to effortlessly blend form and function. In this guide, we will explore the various facets of vertical blinds, from their history and design to their advantages, materials, and maintenance.

A brief history of Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds have a rich history that dates back to the early 1950s, when they were first introduced as an innovative alternative to traditional horizontal blinds.  They were initially designed for commercial spaces but quickly gained popularity in residential settings due to their practicality and contemporary look.

Over the years, vertical blinds have evolved significantly in terms of materials, mechanisms, and design options, reflecting changing tastes and trends in interior design.  Today, they continue to be a preferred choice for many homeowners and business owners seeking a stylish and functional window covering.

What are Vertical blinds?

Vertical blinds are made up of slats or louvres in a vertical configuration that can be easily tilted to block the view from outside or gently filter the light to your desired level.  The louvres hang from a headrail with a chain at the bottom linking them all together, and they are operated by a cord from one side.

Unlike horizontal blinds, which move up and down, vertical blinds open side to side, so you can fully enjoy the view outside, or for easy access through a patio or sliding door. The slats or louvres can be fully adjusted to vary the amount of light or privacy you desire.

The benefits of Vertical blinds

Vertical blinds offer several benefits that make them a popular choice for window coverings:

  • Light Control: Vertical blinds provide precise control over the amount of natural light entering a room. By adjusting the angle of the slats or completely drawing them open, you can create the perfect ambiance for any occasion.
  • Privacy: These blinds are excellent at providing privacy. When fully closed, they effectively block the view from outside while still allowing some diffused light to enter the room.
  • Flexible Styles: Vertical blinds are incredibly versatile and can be customised to match any decor style. They are available in a wide range of colours and patterns to match any interior design.
  • Easy Maintenance: Our vertical blinds are easy to clean and look after, making them a great choice for any family home.
  • Suitable for Bay Windows and Sliding Doors: Vertical blinds can be made very wide, making them an ideal choice for large windows and sliding glass doors. The slats can stack neatly to the side, maximizing the view when desired.

Customisation and Style

One of the standout features of vertical blinds is their customization options. You can personalise the blinds to match your specific preferences and decor.  There are two slat widths available: 89mm louvres, which are a smaller width louvre to maximise light control and privacy, and 127mm louvres for a stylish, more traditional look.

Our vertical blinds are available in a vast array of colours and patterns, making it easy to find the perfect match for your interior design. To enhance the visual appeal, valances or cornices can be added to conceal the headrail and provide a finished look.

Are Vertical blinds child and pet safe?

Our range of vertical blinds can be chainless for additional safety. Each louvre can be weighted at the bottom to eliminate the need for stabilising chains along the bottom of the blind. As well as creating a much cleaner appearance, this makes them perfect for doorways where pets and children might be moving through.

Are Vertical blinds suitable for every room?

Yes, our vertical blinds are suitable for a large array of window types and locations, such as:

  • Bay Windows: A vertical blind is perfect for a bay window, as the headrail can be easily shaped to work around any bend.
  • Sliding Doors: Some of the more popular areas for vertical blinds are patio and french doors, as the louvres can be parted to either side for ease of access.
  • Living Rooms: Vertical blinds are great for lounges and living spaces, especially for larger windows and doorways.
  • Bedrooms: Due to the large choice of fabrics and patterns available, a vertical blind is a good choice for a bedroom. They also have the added benefit of offering great light control as well as privacy.
  • Conservatories: Our vertical blinds are popular in sunrooms and conservatories, as they offer both light and temperature control, as well as the ability to be parted to enjoy the view.
  • Bathrooms: Consider a moisture-resistant fabric for your bathroom. Our vinyl fabric vertical blinds can withstand humidity while providing privacy.
  • Kitchens: Vertical blinds are a practical choice for kitchens, with wipe-cleanable PVC options for easy maintenance.

How can I clean my vertical blinds?

Cleaning vertical blinds is a simple process, and for day-to-day care, a simple vacuum with a brush attachment is all that's needed for fabric vertical blinds.  For vinyl or PVC blinds, you can simply wipe them clean with a damp cloth.  You don't need to take your blinds down to keep them maintained, though you can if they need to be cleaned more thoroughly.

If you need to take them down, simply unclip the chains from the bottom of the louvres and slide out the weights.  Then you can remove the louvres from the headrail and lay them down on a flat surface.  Using a mild detergent, simply wipe each one from top to bottom with a slightly damp, soft cloth.  Be cautious not to scrub the louvres too hard, as this may cause threads and scuffs.

In conclusion, vertical blinds have come on leaps and bounds since the 1950s, evolving into a versatile and stylish option that caters to all styles, tastes, and budgets. Whether you are looking to control light, ensure privacy, or enhance the aesthetics of your home, vertical blinds are an elegant and timeless choice.
