The Ultimate Roman Blinds Buying Guide

6 minute read

Roman blinds are a classy and luxurious type of window covering that is both functional and stylish. They are popular for their clean, elegant appearance and versatility in controlling light and privacy in a room. In this article, we'll explore some of the key features and information about our Roman blinds.

What is a Roman blind?

Roman blinds are made from a single piece of fabric that is horizontally pleated or folded in a series of evenly spaced panels. When the blinds are raised, the fabric forms neat, horizontal folds. When lowered, the fabric lies flat and covers the window.

As the fabric panel is always visible, even when the blind is rolled up above the window recess, you can use our extensive range of stylish fabric options to coordinate with your décor. Our Roman blinds are available in a choice of different lining and control options, including motorised for effortless operation.

Should I buy a Roman blind?

Roman blinds offer plenty of advantages as a window covering option. Not only do they provide a clean and elegant look for your home, they also offer practical benefits.

  • Your window will gain a sophisticated and classy covering that will elevate the look of your room.
  • Keep away prying eyes and maintain your privacy with ease, when the blind is fully closed.
  • Get a better night's sleep with a blackout lining, perfect for bedrooms as they are designed to keep out all external light.
  • Help keep your home warmer this winter by opting for Roman blinds with a thermal interliner. Not only does this add an extra layer of insulation, but it also gives your blinds a plush appearance.
  • You can also layer your Roman blinds with curtains, for even more warmth and heat retention.
  • Motorised options are available, so you can add an extra touch of sophistication to your space with a noiseless electric Roman blind.

Are Roman blinds available electric?

Yes, they are. An electric Roman blind is a great option for hard-to-reach windows or for rooms where you have lots of blinds installed. They come as standard with an easy-to-operate remote control or simple wall switch; no wiring is required. Our electric motors are all noiseless, so they won't add any extra noise pollution to your home. They are also fully smart compatible, so you can open and close your blinds using your phone or through your smart home system.

What lining do I need for my Roman blind?

We have three types of lining available on our Roman blinds. As standard, they all come fully lined, but there are a couple of other options to consider.

  • Standard Lining: Our standard lining helps filter out the sunlight and aids in protecting the fabric of your Roman blind.
  • Interlined: Our interliner option will help keep your home warmer this winter, as well as give your blinds a more opulent appearance.
  • Blackout: A blackout lining will add extra privacy and help block out external light, aiding in restful sleep.

What fabric options can I choose from?

Buying a made-to-measure Roman blind is all about creating your own personalised design. With our diverse range of fabrics, you have the opportunity to craft a distinctive look that will set you apart from the crowd.

Whether you're trying to match your existing decor or create a vibrant contrast using bold, modern designs, we have a large choice of captivating patterns and luxurious plains to choose from. Additionally, we offer sustainable choices, and our ranges feature fabrics that are environmentally friendly.

Do Roman blinds help keep warmth in?

Yes, they can! Installing a custom-made blind that perfectly aligns with your window frame can effectively prevent valuable heat from escaping through your windows. Our Roman blinds come with a standard lining, but for those seeking a more opulent appearance or heat retention during the winter months, consider selecting an interliner to introduce an extra layer of insulation.

In fact, our Roman blinds, when equipped with an interliner, can reduce heat loss through your windows by approximately 20%, and when coupled with curtains, up to 30%.

Where can I have Roman blind fitted?

Our Roman blinds will look great wherever you have them fitted, from lounges to conservatories. They are the perfect choice for bay windows, where they add a touch of elegance and luxury without overpowering the feature of the window itself.

A Roman blind will liven up any living room, add privacy and darkness to your bedroom, provide a touch of style and elegance to your dining room, and offer some much-needed temperature management to your conservatory. In fact, with the exception of the bathroom or kitchen, a Roman blind is suitable for just about anywhere. For kitchens and bathrooms, due to the humidity, we would recommend a faux wooden blind or a roller blind in a suitably moisture-resistant fabric.

Are Roman blinds safe for children and pets?

For your peace of mind, all of our Roman blinds that use cords come with a safety device in line with the latest European regulations. This can sometimes take the form of a discreet cleat or hook for the cord to wrap around. These are fitted at a minimum height of 1.5m above the floor to keep them out of reach of small children. We usually fit our blinds with a quick release mechanism to ensure that even in the worst-case scenario, your blind doesn't become a hazard to your children or pets.

Another option is to go for one of our noiseless electric blinds, which are 100% pet and child safe, as they are opened and closed by a remote control, an app on your phone, or via your smart home system.

How do I clean my Roman blinds?

You can easily make cleaning your Roman blind part of your normal vacuuming routine. We recommend pulling your blind down to the fully closed position and using your vacuum's brush attachment to gently remove dust and dirt.

You can also lightly steam your Roman blind if it becomes creased or wrinkled, using a hand-held steamer. For velvet fabrics, steam on the lining side only. Keep the temperature on the lowest setting, and make sure you hold the attachment well back from the fabric and move it lightly and quickly over the surface, making sure not to stay in one spot for too long.
