Caring For Your New Carpet

Caring For Your New Carpet

3 minute read

Caring for your new carpet is important. To ensure your new carpet retains its pristine appearance, it's crucial to provide proper care and maintenance. Follow these guidelines for effective carpet care:

General Maintenance

  • Vacuum your carpet regularly, at least 2-3 times a week.
  • Place a sturdy doormat at entrances to minimize dirt from outside spreading indoors.
  • Encourage removing shoes at the front door to reduce everyday wear and tear.
  • If possible, avoid placing light-colored carpets near external entrances.
  • Immediately vacuum newly laid man-made fiber and wool carpets.

Loop Pile Carpets

For loop pile carpets, use a cylinder cleaner with the suction head only. Avoid using beater heads and brushes, as they can damage the fibers over time.

Cut Pile Carpets

Ideally, vacuum cut pile carpets with an upright vacuum cleaner equipped with a beater bar and brush. Alternatively, you can use a cylinder vacuum cleaner with a similar attachment.

Soft Deep Pile Carpets

For soft, deep pile carpets, opt for a vacuum cleaner with an adjustable height to ensure proper airflow over the pile surface during cleaning.

Cleaning Spills and Stains

Cleaning Spills and Stains

In households with high activity levels, spills and stains are bound to occur. Follow these steps for effective carpet stain removal:

  • Address spills and stains immediately; do not let them dry.
  • Blot away liquid stains using dry kitchen towels or a clean white cloth.
  • For semi-solid substances, gently remove them with a plastic spatula.
  • Be patient and avoid vigorous rubbing or over-soaking the stain.
  • Always work from the outer edges of the stain toward the center to prevent it from spreading.
  • To remove any remaining stains, blot with a clean, damp cloth.

Polypropylene Carpets

For polypropylene carpets, have a clean, white cloth, household bleach, warm water, and a kitchen towel ready. Follow these steps:

  • Address the spillage immediately to prevent it from drying into the carpet.
  • Remove semi-solid substances with a plastic spatula.
  • Create a bleach solution using one part bleach and ten parts water.
  • Gently blot the stain with the white cloth, starting from the outer edges, and add more bleach to the solution if necessary.
  • After removing the stain, carefully blot the carpet dry with a kitchen towel.

Wool Carpets

For wool carpets, ensure you have a dry kitchen towel, a clean white cloth, warm water, and a plastic spatula. Follow these steps:

  • Address spills or stains immediately, as they may become harder to remove if left to dry.
  • Remove any semi-solid spillages with a plastic spatula to minimize further contact with the carpet.
  • Gently blot the stain with a kitchen towel and warm water, working from the outside in to prevent spreading. Replace the towel when necessary, but avoid over-wetting the carpet.
  • Use a clean, white cloth with a little warm water to continue blotting the stain until it fades significantly.
  • If the stain persists, refer to our wool care guide for more specific stain removal advice.

Job Done

By following these maintenance and cleaning guidelines, you can keep your carpet looking its best for years to come.
